Der Dell Rugged 5414 ist einer der wenigen Laptops, über die man mit dem Auto fahren kann, ohne dass sie kaputt gehen. Ein Notebook, das für den Einsatz unter widrigen Bedingungen gebaut wurde, für das Militär, für Forschungsstationen in der Arktis oder für Bohrinseln. Mit seinem 14-Zoll-Touchscreen und einer Helligkeit von über 1000 nits ist er aber auch den meisten Outdoor-Aufgaben gewachsen. Seine unzähligen Anschlussmöglichkeiten, allen voran die seriellen Schnittstellen, lassen kaum Wünsche offen. Darüber hinaus sind zwei Ethernet Ports, eine Express Card, ein Fingerabdrucksensor, ein SD-Kartenleser, ein HDMI sowie 4 USB Ports mit an Bord. Nicht nur das Gehäuse, sondern auch die Tastatur ist sehr hochwertig und wird durch ein präzises Touchpad perfekt ergänzt.
Windows 11 vs Kali
Für ein modernes Windows 11 ist der Laptop etwas zu schwach, aber mit Kali Linux erwacht er zu neuem Leben (vor allem für Pentester). Eine super einfache Installation über einen USB Stick mit einer Kali ISO und schon flimmert das Kali Linux Wallpaper auf dem Dell Rugged, sogar der Touchscreen und die 1000 nits sowie die meisten Funktionstasten funktionieren "out of box" - der Fingerabdrucksensor allerdings nicht mehr. Auch Wifi und Ethernet funktionieren einwandfrei, wobei ich für spezielle Anwendungen einen Dualband USB Wifi Stick empfehlen würde.

The Dell Rugged 5414 is truly one of the few laptops that can drive a car without wrecking it. A laptop built for the harshest environments, for the military, for research stations in the Arctic or drilling islands. With its 14-inch touch display and over 1000 nits of brightness, it can handle most outdoor tasks. With its countless connection possibilities, especially the serial interfaces, there are hardly any wishes left unfulfilled. Furthermore, two Ethernet ports, an Express Card, a fingerprint sensor, an SD card reader, an HDMI as well as 4 USB ports can be found on board. The case as well as the keyboard are very high quality and complement each other perfectly with an accurate touchpad. For a modern Windows 11 the laptop is a bit too weak, but with Kali Linux it comes to new life (especially for pentesters). A super simple installation via a USB stick with a Kali ISO and already the Kali Linux wallpaper is flashing on the Dell Rugged, even the touchscreen and the 1000 nits as well as most function keys work "out of the box" - the fingerprint sensor, however, not any more. Wifi and Ethernet also work fine, although I would recommend a dual-band USB wifi stick for special applications.
